Pastel on Paper - 12"x 9"
This is a painting of Lewis Falls located on the Lewis River at the foothills of Saint Mount Helen in Southwestern Washington. I painted this from a photograph I took while Trout and Salmon fishing the Lewis River, when we were in Portland, OR the fall of 2005. According to local information the Native Americans would gather at the falls in great numbers during the Salmon runs to slaughter, camp, party and feast on the salmon by the thousands during spawning cycle. Unfortunately due to several man-made lakes located downstream that has completely eliminated the salmons ability to reach their original place of birth, the runs no longer exist in the upper reaches of the river. However with the assistance of government, local and conservations projects all downstream dams were currently being updated to include the necessary facilities to restore the original salmon runs.
